Our story

Why the Society was founded, and the vision it was founded on.

A New Era for Primary Healthcare

"Every great journey begins with a vision. The journey of the Society of Family Medicine-Bangladesh begins with a vision to transform healthcare by strengthening Family Medicine — the foundation of a healthier nation."

A historic beginning

The launch of SFMB is a real milestone in how healthcare is evolving in Bangladesh. It's more than another professional association coming into being — it's the shared aspiration of family physicians, general practitioners, educators, researchers, and healthcare leaders who believe quality healthcare starts with strong primary care.

This inaugural newsletter marks the start of that journey — a platform to share knowledge, push academic excellence, encourage research, advocate for better policy, and strengthen professional collaboration. Above all, it reflects our commitment to improving health for every individual, family, and community in Bangladesh.

Why Family Medicine?

Healthcare is changing fast. People are living longer, chronic disease is more common, mental health concerns are more visible, and care itself has gotten more complex. A lot of patients now live with multiple conditions needing long-term management rather than a one-time fix.

Family Medicine is built for exactly this. Unlike specialties centred on a single organ or disease, it provides comprehensive, continuous, coordinated, person-centred care — from newborns to older adults, factoring in the physical, psychological, social, and environmental sides of health. Family physicians don't just treat illness; they promote wellness, prevent disease, coordinate specialists, and support families through life's transitions, staying trusted partners over years. That continuity improves outcomes, cuts unnecessary tests and admissions, and raises patient satisfaction. Put simply: Family Medicine treats people, not just diseases.

Why Bangladesh needs Family Medicine now

Bangladesh has made real progress — lower maternal and child mortality, wider immunization coverage, better life expectancy. But the country's healthcare system now faces new realities: rising non-communicable disease, an ageing population, growing mental health needs, rapid urbanization, and climbing healthcare costs. Too many patients bounce between specialists with nobody overseeing the whole picture, which means fragmented treatment, duplicated tests, and unnecessary spending. What's needed is an approach built around prevention, continuity, coordination, and comprehensive care — which is exactly what Family Medicine offers. Strengthening it isn't just about adding a specialty; it's about strengthening the foundation of the entire healthcare system.

Learning from the world

Family Medicine's importance is recognized globally. Countries with strong primary healthcare consistently get better outcomes, greater equity, lower costs, and higher satisfaction. WHO has long emphasized Primary Health Care as the cornerstone of Universal Health Coverage, and WONCA continues to advocate for Family Medicine as one of the most effective ways to improve population health. From the UK and Canada to Australia and the Netherlands, family physicians play a central role in accessible, high-quality care — proof that investing in Family Medicine is one of the smartest moves any country can make. Bangladesh now has a real opportunity to adapt these lessons to its own context.

The birth of SFMB

SFMB exists because a group of physicians believed Family Medicine deserved a stronger academic, professional, and policy presence here. Founded as a professional, academic, non-profit, and non-political organization, it's dedicated to advancing Family Medicine through education, research, advocacy, collaboration, and professional development. Our vision goes beyond supporting physicians — we want to contribute to national health priorities by strengthening primary healthcare, promoting prevention, and advocating for policies that improve access to quality care, uniting family physicians, general practitioners, residents, students, researchers, and partners under one platform dedicated to excellence.

Our roadmap for the future

The journey has only begun, but the ambitions are real. In the coming years, SFMB aims to strengthen undergraduate and postgraduate education in Family Medicine, promote CME and CPD, support clinical research, publish newsletters and educational resources, organize national conferences and workshops, build partnerships with government agencies, universities, hospitals, and international bodies, encourage leadership development among young physicians, advocate for stronger primary healthcare policy, and foster international collaboration through WONCA and leading Family Medicine colleges.

Every member has a role

SFMB's future doesn't rest on its Executive Committee alone — it depends on every member. Whether you're a senior consultant, a general practitioner, a resident, a student, or a researcher, your ideas and commitment shape where this Society goes. A strong professional society is built not only by its leaders but by the collective energy of its members.

A shared vision

This inaugural newsletter is an invitation — to learn, collaborate, innovate, and advocate; to build a stronger professional identity for Family Medicine; and, most of all, to work together toward a healthcare system that's accessible, compassionate, and centred on people's needs. The road ahead will need perseverance and good leadership. There will be challenges, but there will be real opportunities too.

SFMB has taken its first step. With the support of its members and partners, that step becomes a movement — one that strengthens Family Medicine, empowers family physicians, and improves the health of our nation.

Every successful healthcare system begins with strong primary care. Every strong primary care system depends on competent, compassionate family physicians. And every thriving professional discipline needs an organization that unites and supports its members. That organization is here now. The journey has begun — let's walk it together, with purpose and partnership. Together, we will strengthen Family Medicine. Together, we will strengthen Primary Healthcare. Together, we will build a healthier Bangladesh.
